ROCK FOR KONGO 2010
Rock for Kongo ‘10, February 26, Kulturzentrum Timelkam

“Rock for Kongo” started out 4 years ago, as a medium-sized charity concert in Timelkam, Upper Austria. Back then, the organizers hadn’t even graduated from highschool, and their venture, to throw a  party in order to support an educational project for girls in the Dem. Rep. of Kongo, while in the middle of preparing for said highschool’s final exams, was doubted by more than a handful of people.

Four years later, they sure proved their critics wrong. “Rock for Kongo” took off to be ever more successful each year since. At  the three previous concerts, that featured local and regional Reggae, Ska and World Acts, a total of € 22 000 could be raised.  To put “Rock for Kongo” on more solid feet, an association of the same name was founded in 2008.
That was followed by the organization’s most successful year so far:
After that year’s concert had attracted a number of visitors that exceeded the two previous years, about 800, “Rock for Kongo” was awarded the “Upper Austrian Solidarity Award” on May 15, 2009. That prize carried a value of € 2000, and of course that money was used to support aforementioned project as well.

At this year’s concert, on February 26th , the “Rock for Kongo” Team is planning on beating all previous events, with an exceptional line-up that reads as follows:
HANS SÖLLNER (http://www.soellner-hans.de/)
JAMARAM  (http://www.jamaram.de/en_pages/index.php)
CONGARILLA (http://www.congarilla.com/)
DISPATCHED (covering legendary DISPATCH, www.myspace.com/dispatched)

Therefore, it can be considered a fact, that the  upcoming show will not only blow people’s minds, but also give them the chance to make their own contribution for a little bit more social justice on this planet.

Tickets can be reserved in advance here, or you can buy them at the following locations in Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria: Café Mayr (B1C1), Teehaus, Buchhandlung Neudorfer.

Project: What “Rock for Kongo” is supporting:
“Education for Girls” is a project that is run by Ms. Hildegard Litzlhammer, an Austrian who has been living in  Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Kongo for almost 30 years. Not wanting to tolerate the misery over there, she founded a school, a boarding school, and a Café, that serves as a training center, where girls who would otherwise have nothing, but a miserable life on the street, learn how to bake, to earn them a living later on. Formal education alone is worthless in a country like Kongo, thus, the approach that Ms. Litzlhammer chose, combines education up to a level that equals highschool graduation, and  said practical education. The institution is only for girls, since their lives are incomparably harder in that country. Many families blame their daughters for their own poverty, accusing them of being “witches” and casting them out of their families, the only form of a minimal social security network existing in a “failed state”, like Kongo. Ms. Litzlhammer has made it her mission to pick up these girls, and provide them with what is needed for a viable future, most importantly education. She has done that, successfully, for over 50 girls by now, and has no intention to cease her efforts. We admire that, and that is why “Rock for Kongo” has been founded in order to support this extraordinary project.

Team: Who we are:
As mentioned before, we started out 4 years ago, when still in highschool. The seven of us had just listened to a presentation about the Dem. Rep. Kongo, which left us shocked at all the misery, that in its extent is almost entirely unknown to the world. Instantly, we thought that something had to be done. However, we didn’t want to annoy people by simply going around collecting money. Besides, we thought that might not be too effective anyway. The same day, the idea of staging a charity concert was born, and the success led us to keep going, even though we are no longer schoolmates, but scattered all over Austria, actually all over the world. Our team’s members are Klambauer Teresa, Kosch Marlena, Martin Simone, Permanschlager Isabella, Stöttinger Lisa-Maria, Wiesmüller Julia and Winter Elisabeth. If you want to know more about “Rock for Kongo”, you can join us on Facebook  (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=163448944375) and contact us, the administrators of that group,  personally.
